Poker Profiles: Gavin Griffin

Gavin Griffin took his Poker prominence one flight higher when he became the youngest player ever to win a World Series of Poker bracelet. He lost that record shortly to Eric Froehlich, but that does not matter. What matters is, Gavin continued to play big even after that first major win.

Gavin was born on August 21, 1981 in Darien, Illinois. Gavin was a sports enthusiast while he was young, which explains his competitive spirit. He was once into baseball and was even considering entering college through a baseball scholarship. Then again, he knew he had very little chance at the big league and is not prepared to tend to the minor league all his life. So Gavin scratched that plan and enrolled at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas as a speech pathology student. One summer after his freshman year, he was invited for a game of Poker.

That initial game translated into a regular habit and prompted Gavin to learn as much as he can about the game. He used Poker to support his finances. When Gavin was in his senior year, he took a job at a private Poker room in Arlington, Texas. He got in as a dealer. At about this time, his kind of play can decently win games.

After a while of squeezing time between studying, Poker dealing, and playing, Gavin knew he needed to give up on one to concentrate on the others. Since the lure of Poker proved to be stronger, he quit school and dealt with Poker full time. Gavin's first take at the professional league was as an online player but he decided to take the professional route by joining tournaments not long afterwards.

Since winning his first WSOP title, Gavin became a fixed persona at the tournament circuit. Although his $270,000 cash prize from WSOP is nothing compared to the $2 million plus he pursed at the European Poker Tour, he still considers the former as his greatest achievement.

Aside from those two tournaments, Gavin also had successful takes at the WSOP Circuit Event, the WSOP Pot Limit Hold'em Championship, and the Borgata Winter Open of the World Poker Tour. Gavin's total tournament winnings as of the moment, is about $4,500,000.

On the sideline of Gavin's Poker career was an active participation on breast cancer awareness activities. His greatest inspiration in doing pretty much every thing in his life was his girlfriend, who was diagnosed with the big C at a young age of 20.
